School Days: Helping Your Child with Autism Thrive in the Classroom
Aug 25, 2025
Sending your child with autism to school can bring unique worries. Will they fit in? Will they get the support they need? As a pediatrician, I believe strong communication between home and school is key to your child's success.
How to support your child's school journey:
* Share Information: Provide the school with a clear picture of your child's strengths, challenges, communication style, and any sensory needs. The more they know, the better they can help.
* Understand Their Plan: Learn about your child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan. This is a legal document outlining the special education services and accommodations they'll receive. Ask questions until you understand it fully.
* Communicate Regularly: Establish an open line of communication with teachers and school staff. Regular check-ins can catch minor issues before they escalate into bigger problems.
* Prepare for Changes: Help your child prepare for new routines, substitute teachers, or fire drills. Visual schedules or social stories can be very helpful.
* Focus on Strengths: Remind the school (and yourself!) of your child's amazing abilities and talents.
* Advocate Gently: You are your child's best advocate. Don't be afraid to speak up for their needs, but do so respectfully and cooperatively.
School can be an excellent place for learning and growth. By working together, we can ensure your child has the best possible experience.
